These White Sage leaves are left loose, so you can decide the portions you wish to burn. White Sage has a distinctive rich, somewhat bitter, smoke. It is renowned for its cleansing abilities, specifically of negative energies that may have built up in surroundings and in the self. 

The intention of smudging is to spiritually purify the surroundings. This is done by setting the smudging material alight, then blowing it out, and placing it in a (non-flammable!) bowl. You then allow the smoke to fill and cleanse the space. This is a sacred practice in many cultures, including Native American.
