Born in Paris in the spring of 1836, Jules Cheret was a self-taught painter and lithographer who quickly rose to popularity in the Belle Epoque-influenced design world. His work and illustration style, specifically his work depicting sensual and optimistic femmes, was thought to have overall influenced many ladies' social liberation movements. The drawings he made of femmes depicted them enjoying life's pleasures of music and spirit and usually showed them in more progressive and evocative clothing than society had previously suggested and inspired many to take their lives into the next century.
This was just one of many posters Cheret designed for a popular Parisian department store in the late 1800s. Depicting a happy child surrounded by toys and mounted on a rocking horse, this poster captures the magic of Cheret's vision of joy and happiness even in trying times.
