The hippie cathedral of San Francisco expanded to several new locations in 1968, namely “Fillmore East” in lower Manhattan. Formerly a Yiddish Theatre, the site was opened on March 8, 1968 with performances by Janis Joplin backed by Big Brother and The Holding Company, Tim Buckley and Albert King. Joplin was beginning to discover her value as a solo artist, being the main draw of Big Brother’s tour that year.
