Donuts is the second studio album of American producer and rapper J Dilla, and was released three days before his untimely death. Donuts is an instrumental hip-hop album, featuring only a few scattered vocals and samples. J Dilla's goal with the album was to produce something that was too weird for MCs to rap over, but would make them want to. The final track of the album bleeds into the beginning of the first track, making the album cyclical, like a donut. In 2020 Donuts was ranked #386 by Rolling Stone on their list 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. It is widely considered J Dilla's magnum opus.
James Dewitt Yancey, more widely known as J Dilla or Jay Dee, was born in 1974. He was an American rapper, songwriter, producer, and drummer. He came from a family of musicians, and was always interested in music. J Dilla formed the hip-hop group Slum Village with his high school friends. He was also a member of the musical collective Soulquarians. J Dilla's credit list crossed over from impressive to monumental. He collaborated with Janet Jackson, Busta Rhymes, A Tribe Called Quest, Poe, Erykah Badu, Kanye West, Bilal, and Common. That list barely scratches the surface of his collaborations. Incredibly prolific, J Dilla is widely credited as one of the most influential producers in hip-hop and pop music. J Dilla passed away, due to complications from TTP and lupus, on February 10th, 2006. He died three days after his 32nd birthday, and the release of his second studio album "Donuts"
