Hiroshige was a Japanese artist born in 1797. He was descended from a line of Samurai warriors and worked with his father, and later in life his son, as a fire patrol at the Imperial Palace. He quickly worked his way into classrooms where he learned painting and woodblock printmaking, and quickly excelled in both. His work focused on less glamourous and theatrical parts of everyday life while still utilizing traditional art-making methods. Traditionally, artists and printmakers at that time were focusing their subject matter on actors and actresses, musicians and other performers, however, Hiroshige turned his attention to the natural beauty of the mountains and bay around him. His death would mark a decline in this much-celebrated traditional art form in Japan, however, his work is still enjoyed around the world by millions to this day.
