Known fondly as the "King of Rock and Roll," Elvis Presley helped shape one of the most influential sounds in American music history. Born and raised on the Mississippi, between Tupelo and Memphis, Presley was directly influenced by Black performers at the time- drawing inspiration from rock, soul, and even religious performers. He would help shift the status quo for modern music with his performances and approach to other social expectations. Although he was drafted for two years in the height of his career, he managed to return and rise again to infamy.
